Jay is a Psychotherapist, Supervisor, & Group Analyst with many years’ experience working as a Psychotherapist in mental health services in the NHS, and in drug rehabilitation services in West London. He was lead for the Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) Service in Somerset NHS Trust, before moving to Devon to take up work as a Psychotherapist in a Specialist Therapeutic Community within the Personality Disorder Service where he worked for 10 years. Whilst here, he began training as a Group Analyst with the Institute of Group Analysis. He worked as the Professional Lead at The Haldon Specialist Eating Disorder Service before retiring from the NHS.
Jay’s clinical experience and interests include treatment for personality disorders (more recently understood as complex emotional needs); complex trauma and dissociative processes; eating disorders; OCD; anxiety and depression. He works collaboratively, drawing on ideas from CAT, Relational Psychoanalysis, & Group Analysis. He offers both short and long-term individual psychotherapy, Cognitive Analytic Training therapies and supervision.
Having studied Philosophy as an undergraduate, Jay feels drawn to a philosophical and existential appreciation of the nature of our Being and how some of the ideas found there, connect with relational psychoanalytic approaches to our understanding of self, others, and the world.
He teaches on Exeter University’s Doctoral programme of Clinical Psychology, where he also provides Reflective Practice. He is a course moderator for two CAT Practitioner Trainings: Cumbria, Newcastle, Tyne & Weir (CNTW) and Manchester. He is also the moderator of the CAT Foundation training on Liverpool University’s Doctoral programme of Clinical Psychology. He is a tutor on CAT’s UKCP psychotherapy training and recently joined the teaching team for the Foundation in Group Analysis at Group Analysis Southwest (GASW). He was Chair of ACAT from 2020-2023, and a Trustee until 2024. He remains a member of ACAT's Ethics Committee.
I bring together ideas from CAT, Object Relations and Group Analysis to inform my practice and understanding of psychotherapy.
We come into being, and our identity is ‘shaped’ – so to speak – through important early childhood relationships. But problematic experiences in our development can lead to patterns of relating that seem only to lead back into a repetition of the past, as well as limiting our growth and potential. Their familiarity makes it hard to detect since it is hard to see who we are from ‘outside’ ourselves.
By paying close attention to the therapeutic relationship in the present, and working collaboratively with you, the past can slowly begin to emerge into conscious awareness, which in turn can bring choice and change closer to hand. The process of psychotherapy invites us to question and explore who we are and uncover what’s hidden.
I believe it is through the rhythm, boundaries and containment of the psychotherapeutic relationship, that new meaning, beginnings and understandings can emerge.
I offer both short and long-term psychotherapy, as well as CAT training therapies. I am also available for supervision (UKCP Registered) and consultation. I run a weekly psychotherapy group for people to meet, explore and learn how being in a group can help to increase awareness of our interpersonal processes’ and relational identity. Groupwork can bring deep and lasting understanding and change.
I have been Course Co-Director for CAT Practitioner Training in Somerset NHS; am visiting lecturer on Exeter University's D.Clin.Psychology; I have presented CAT in numerous settings. I have been Chair of ACAT (Association of Cognitive Analytic Therapy), and remain a Trustee.
